How Long Does a Pet Photoshoot Take

A realistic, minute-by-minute breakdown of what to expect during a Horizon Pet Photography session, from arrival and settling-in time to wrap-up.

The Short Answer

Most of our sessions run 45 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on the format, your pet's temperament, and how many pets are involved. Here's a more detailed breakdown so you know exactly what to expect and can plan your day around it.

Studio Sessions: 45–60 Minutes

Studio sessions tend to move efficiently since we're not dealing with weather, lighting changes, or outdoor distractions. A typical studio session breaks down like this:

  • 0–10 minutes: Arrival, settling in, letting your pet explore the space
  • 10–45 minutes: Active shooting, with breaks as needed for water or rest
  • 45–60 minutes: Wrap-up, wardrobe or setup changes if applicable

Multi-pet studio sessions typically run closer to 60–75 minutes to allow time with each pet individually as well as together.

Outdoor Sessions: 60–90 Minutes

Outdoor sessions take longer because we're often moving between a few spots within a park or along a trail to capture variety — different backgrounds, different light, different types of shots (portraits, action, candid moments).

  • 0–15 minutes: Arrival and settling-in time, letting your pet get comfortable with the new environment
  • 15–75 minutes: Active shooting across 2–3 locations within the park or trail
  • 75–90 minutes: Wrap-up and any final shots

What Affects Session Length

Your Pet's Personality

Nervous or slow-to-warm-up pets sometimes need extra settling time before we start shooting in earnest — we always build this in rather than rushing. High-energy dogs sometimes need short breaks to avoid overexertion, especially in warmer months.

Number of Pets

Multi-pet sessions naturally take longer since we're capturing both individual portraits and group shots, and coordinating multiple animals takes patience.

Weather (Outdoor Sessions)

On hot days, we build in more water and shade breaks. On cold days, especially with short-haired breeds, we sometimes shoot in shorter, more frequent bursts to keep your pet comfortable.

What We Don't Rush

Even on a tight schedule, we never rush the settling-in period. The first several minutes of any session — letting your pet sniff around, get used to the camera, and relax — directly determines how natural and comfortable they look in every photo after that. A rushed start almost always shows up in stiff, uncomfortable-looking images.

Planning Your Day Around a Session

We recommend not scheduling anything immediately before or after your session that would add pressure or rushing. Pets pick up on handler stress, and a relaxed, unhurried owner makes for a much smoother shoot. If you're driving in from outside the city, plan for parking and a few extra minutes of buffer time on either end.

Questions About Your Specific Session?

Session length can vary based on your pet's needs and the package you book. If you have a specific concern — a reactive dog, a very young puppy, a senior pet with limited stamina — let us know when booking so we can plan the right pacing for your session.
